Unlike a conventional “dry” timing belt, a wet timing belt operates inside the engine where it is immersed in oil. This can help avoid the cracking and deterioration seen in dry belts. But in reality, certain engines are still prone to premature wet belt failure—something many owners of Ford 1.0 EcoBoost, Transit/Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue, and the Peugeot/Citroën/Vauxhall 1.2 PureTech (also found in Toyota and Honda) are fully aware of. We at Broomhead Garage, serving Dunfermline and beyond, specialise in diagnosing and replacing these wet belts before they lead to engine damage.
When a wet timing belt begins to fail, it can delaminate, shedding particles into the engine oil. These particles may block the oil pump strainer, cause oil pressure faults, tensioner seizure or worse—leading to serious engine damage. In some instances, the first symptom is a solid brake pedal during driving, caused by belt debris damaging the brake vacuum pump. Sadly, we see failures in vehicles with only 19,000–70,000 miles on the clock. At Broomhead Garage, our technicians use specialist tools and locking equipment to perform the replacement correctly—avoiding shortcuts that risk unseen damage.
At Broomhead Garage in Dunfermline, we offer a comprehensive wet belt replacement service using high-quality parts and following full repair procedures. Key aspects include:
Because of the need to remove the sump and allow for sealant curing, the vehicle is typically with us for about a day and a half.
Without removing the sump, hidden debris from the failing belt can remain, rendering the replacement less effective—and potentially leaving you with the same risk of oil strainer blockages and engine damage.
Vehicle manufacturers may quote long intervals, but real-world failures mean we recommend earlier replacement—especially if your vehicle lacks full service history and correct oils have not always been used.
Because wet belt replacement varies dramatically by engine type, vehicle age and condition, please call us at Broomhead Garage in Dunfermline for a more exact quote tailored to your car.

Replacing the wet belt on a Ford Ranger is a complex and time-intensive procedure. To perform it correctly, the sump must be removed, which involves detaching the subframe, steering rack, gearbox differential, and driveshafts for full access.
Some garages may offer a quicker, cheaper option that skips sump removal. However, this is not recommended. Over time, wet belts deteriorate and shed material, which can block the oil pump strainer. The only reliable way to clean or inspect this is by removing and replacing the sump.
Skipping this step makes the job ineffective, as the oil system remains contaminated.
💷 Prices from £1,590, inclusive of parts and labour, using the same genuine components as the EcoBlue kit.
For all wet belt replacement services, we’ll need your vehicle for approximately one and a half days. This allows time for high-temperature HT sealants on the sump and timing case cover to fully cure before refilling with new oil and carrying out a final road test. This process ensures optimal sealing performance and helps prevent oil leaks after the service.
